Review The Minotaur Sampler: Vol. 18

Like many anthologies and samplers, the stories don't all click.  Some connect because of the plot or characters.

For me the book got a higher rating due to the very first selection, Wreck Your Heart by Lori Rader-Day.  A drag performer discovers that a friend has been murdered in the building, in which she lives and works. Wonderful characters and atmosphere. I'd love to go to that bar.

No real stinkers, which is actually a surprise in this type of collection. Most are standard thriller/mystery works, but a couple of supernatural elements. Those may be a plus or minus depending on the reader. Of these, the Bone Queen stood out with a mother searching for her missing daughter on an island known for its secrets.

Review: The Luminous Fairies and Mothra

I had no clue that there had been a novela that predated the release of the Japanese film, Mothra. Contracted by Toho studios it was the work of three authors, each of whom wrote a section.

The first part of this book contains the story, while the second part discusses the history of the writing of the book, changes made in the film and how each was influenced. Absolutely fascinating.

I grew up watching this film and the other Kaiju movies coming from Toho Studios and other filmmakers. It's interesting to see how budgets and politics made changes to the film while it was still in production.

Book Review - They Want to Kill Americans by Malcolm Nance

Unflinching examination of the growth of White extremism and its influence on the current MAGA movement. Discusses the importance of confronting the racism and extremism of the movement. Nance has written books following this one that brings some of this information up to date prior to the reelection of Trump and this current administration. Some of the final segments of this book were written while he was serving in the Foreign Legion of non-Ukrainians fighting in that country.

Written in 2022, it covers the events leading up to the January 6th attempt to overthrow our government and the few years following.

A warning of what came to pass and how we got to this point.

Going through some stuff.

My companion, Princess Leia sadly passed away this past Thursday evening. The veterinarian believed her to be close to 17 years old, but she only became sick shortly before I took her in. She was with me close to 14 years and it seems odd here without her. I am heartbroken.

I've also recently turned 75 years old, so it's been a pretty crazy few weeks, as you can imagine.

I really feel that I should spend more time here rather than just logging in a couple of times a year, or just do a repost of some article I've read. Also, while I have tried in the past not to be political here, I have decided to post everything here and not split it between two different blogs.

My hope is to post reviews more regularly and toss in commentary on the situation here in the US.

If I do forget to check in later this week, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, a happy holiday season, or whatever you may celebrate or ignore until the New Year.
