Review: "Dr. Werthless" by Harold Schechter and Eric Powell.

Growing up as a comics reader in the '60s and '70s, the doctor was the ultimate boogeyman of our hobby. With no real knowledge of the man's earlier career, he was just the guy who almost single handedly destroyed the comic book industry.

Powell and Schechter here spend almost have the book examining Wertham's early career, his involvement with civil rights, friendship with the writer, Richard Wright and others. The latter half deals with the controversial stance Wertham took against almost all comics, crime/horror related or not.

Whether you can 'forgive' the doctor for his campaign or not, it's fascinating to see him revealed as brilliant but flawed individual.
